Why Is Agile the Standard of Modern Software Development?
The traditional waterfall model struggles to adapt to changing requirements. Agile methodology solves this problem with flexibility, continuous improvement, and customer focus. At BUZ Yazılım, we have been applying Agile principles in our projects since 2007 and adding value to over 100 clients.
The Agile Manifesto
Published in 2001, the Agile Manifesto is built on four core values:
- Individuals and interactions over processes and tools
- Working software over comprehensive documentation
- Customer collaboration over contract negotiation
- Responding to change over following a plan
12 Agile Principles (Highlights)
- Customer satisfaction is the highest priority
- Changing requirements are welcomed
- Working software is delivered frequently
- Business people and developers work together
- Trust and support are given to the team
- Face-to-face communication is preferred
The Scrum Framework
Scrum is the most widely used Agile framework. It is designed to manage complex product development processes.
Scrum Roles
Product Owner
- Defines and communicates the product vision
- Manages and prioritizes the Product Backlog
- Responsible for maximizing business value
- Acts as the bridge between stakeholders and the development team
Scrum Master
- Ensures Scrum processes are properly followed
- Removes impediments blocking the team
- Coaches the team on continuous improvement
- Upholds Scrum values and principles
Development Team
- Cross-functional and self-organizing team
- Ideal size: 3-9 people
- Responsible for achieving sprint goals
- Maintains quality standards
Scrum Events
Sprint
- Fixed-duration development cycle of 1-4 weeks
- Sprint duration remains unchanged throughout the project
- A potentially shippable product increment at the end of each sprint
Sprint Planning
- Conducted at the beginning of the sprint
- Sprint goal is determined
- Sprint Backlog is created from the Product Backlog
- Answers "What can we do this sprint?" and "How will we do it?"
- Duration: Maximum 2 hours per sprint week (4 hours for a 2-week sprint)
Daily Standup
A short meeting at the same time every day, maximum 15 minutes:
- What did I do yesterday?
- What will I do today?
- Are there any impediments?
Problem-solving is handled separately after the meeting.
Sprint Review
- Demo is presented to stakeholders at the end of the sprint
- Completed work is reviewed
- Feedback is collected
- Product Backlog is updated
Sprint Retrospective
As the final event of the sprint, the team evaluates itself:
- What went well?
- What could be better?
- What improvements will we make?
Scrum Artifacts
Product Backlog
- Prioritized list of all work to be done for the product
- Managed by the Product Owner
- Continuously updated and refined
- In user story format: "As a [user], I want to [action], so that [benefit]"
Sprint Backlog
- List of items to be completed in the sprint
- Managed by the development team
- Updated daily
Increment
- Working software delivered at the end of the sprint
- Must meet the Definition of Done
- Builds on top of previous sprint increments
Tips for Effective Scrum Implementation
- Start with a sprint duration of 2 weeks
- Write user stories according to INVEST criteria
- Estimate with story points (Fibonacci sequence)
- Track progress with a burndown chart
- Take retrospectives seriously and implement action items
- Define and update the Definition of Done as a team
